The Ministry of Coal (MoC), through the Office of the Nominated Authority, on August 3, 2026, issued an Office Memorandum releasing the National Lignite Index (NLI) with Base Year 2021-22 and the corresponding Representative Prices (Rs./tonne) for the month of June 2026. The Index has been compiled in accordance with the approved methodology using certified data received from eight lignite sector companies. [Office Memorandum No. NA/7/2023-NA]
The Office Memorandum states that the National Lignite Index and Representative Prices for June 2026 have been finalized based on the approved computation methodology. The detailed NLI values and representative prices for the relevant period have been provided in the annexure attached to the Office Memorandum.
The publication of the National Lignite Index provides a standardized benchmark for lignite prices based on industry data and supports transparency in the coal and lignite sector. The notified NLI and Representative Prices may be used by stakeholders for commercial, contractual, and policy-related purposes wherever the National Lignite Index is prescribed or referenced.
